How Do I Change My Taxonomy Code in ElderSuite? (You Don't — Here's Why)

This article explains where the provider taxonomy code lives in ElderSuite, what we send on electronic claims, and what to do when a payer asks you to change it. When you finish, you will know the Adult Day Care code we use, why there is no field to edit, and what to check before the next claim.

A taxonomy code classifies your facility type for enrollment and billing. For adult day care, that code is 261QA0600X. ElderSuite includes it on the 837P professional claim when the payer's file format calls for a taxonomy.

There is no taxonomy field to change

You cannot change the taxonomy code in ElderSuite. There is no taxonomy box on Provider Information, on the payment type, or on the clearinghouse record. Searching Provider Center or Claim Center will not find one.

We send 261QA0600X because ElderSuite is built for adult day care, and adult day care has one taxonomy. The rest of the claim—procedure codes, modifiers, and units—is built on that same basis. A different taxonomy would not match the services on the file. It is not a setting you can turn on. Support cannot change the value for a particular payer.

The code we send

When a payer or an enrollment packet asks what taxonomy ElderSuite uses, the answer is 261QA0600X. Tell them that value. Do not send them to a screen to look it up.

On the electronic claim, when the payer's 837P includes taxonomy, we write that value in two places:

• Billing provider: PRV*BI*PXC*261QA0600X~ (Loop 2000A)
• Rendering provider: PRV*PE*PXC*261QA0600X~ (Loop 2310B)

PXC is the qualifier that marks the value as a taxonomy code.

The printed CMS-1500 does not carry a taxonomy code. Box 24J receives the NPI only. Nothing is written to Box 33b or to the shaded part of Box 24J. An empty box there is the expected result, not a fault. Editing the CMS-1500 preview in ElderSuite does not change the electronic claim we submit.

When the 837P includes the taxonomy

Not every payer requires a taxonomy on the 837P. For most payers we include 261QA0600X. We omit the taxonomy segment for Cigna-HealthSpring, Texas Medicaid, El Paso Health, Veterans Administration, both Tri-West payers, and Driscoll.

If a payer does not require taxonomy, omitting it is correct. If they do require it, 261QA0600X is the value that should match your Adult Day Care enrollment.

If a payer says the taxonomy is wrong

When a payer tells you to check your taxonomy code, or to change it and resubmit, the mismatch is in your enrollment record with that payer (or with HHSC, for Texas Medicaid programs), not in ElderSuite. If they enrolled the facility under a different taxonomy, we will still send 261QA0600X. Resubmitting without a matching enrollment record produces the same denial.

1. Tell the payer's provider services or credentialing department that the claims send 261QA0600X, the Adult Day Care taxonomy.
2. Ask them to update your enrollment to that taxonomy.
3. Wait until they confirm the update. There is nothing to edit in ElderSuite.
4. After they confirm, resubmit the affected claims using the steps below.

Correcting enrollment is done with the payer. We cannot change their record.

What to check on the next claim

After the payer confirms enrollment, send the claims again through Claim Center. Process Claims only picks up claims whose status is Pending and that are not flagged with an error.

1. Open Claim Center → Reconcile Claims.
2. Find the affected claims. Use Filter by Payment Type or Filter by Claim Status if the list is long.
3. Check the claims to resubmit.
4. Click Change to..., select Pending in Select New Claim Status, and click Change.
5. Click Save & Close.
6. Open Claim Center → Scrub Claims, run Scrub & Fix, resolve any remaining errors, and save.
7. Open Claim Center → Process Claims and submit the batch for that payer.

On the next file, confirm the payer is reading the 837P, not a printed CMS-1500. If they still report a mismatch after they updated enrollment, stay on their credentialing record—there is still nothing to change in ElderSuite.

A computer running an older ElderSuite version may omit taxonomy segments that current versions send. Update every computer used for billing; updating one does not update the rest. Open Provider Center → Manage Device Installations to see which computers are in use.

Troubleshooting

• I cannot find a Taxonomy Code field. There is none. Do not look on Provider Information, Claim Setup, payment types, or the clearinghouse record.
• The printed claim is blank where the payer said to put taxonomy. Expected. Taxonomy travels in the 837P, not on the CMS-1500 printout.
• The payer still denies after I looked for a field in ElderSuite. The enrollment still does not match 261QA0600X. Go back to provider services.
• The payer also asks for a nine-digit ZIP. That is a separate field from taxonomy. Molina's 2026 requirement change was about exactly this: the taxonomy was already handled, and the only thing to enter was the ZIP+4. Enter the full ZIP+4 on Provider Center → Provider Information → Physical Address, then click Save & Close, and make sure every computer used for billing is running the current version of ElderSuite. Use the provider address, not client addresses.
