Report or Form Not Printing Correctly or Completely in ElderSuite
Blank or cut-off ElderSuite printouts usually mean a printer-driver issue. Confirm the report on screen, flip Enable Legacy Mode, check paper size, then try Print to PDF.

When an ElderSuite report or form looks fine in the Report Viewer but comes out of the printer blank, cut off, garbled, or on the wrong pages, the usual cause is how the printer driver handles the PDF—not missing data in ElderSuite. This article walks the checks in order so you can isolate the problem before you open a ticket.
Use the same Report Viewer steps whether you opened a form from the Report Center or from another Center. For examples of reports that end in this viewer, see How to Print Attendance and Absence Reports in ElderSuite and How to Print the Client Roster in ElderSuite.
Confirm the report on screen first
Open the report or form the usual way so it appears in the Report Viewer. Wait until the Working... indicator finishes and the pages are visible.
Check that the content looks complete on screen: text is readable, fields are filled, and the page count is not stuck at 0. If the viewer is empty, shows File Not Found, or ElderSuite reports that the report is missing, stop here—that is not a printer problem. See Troubleshooting below.
Nothing reaches a printer until you click Print (or press Ctrl+P) from the Report Viewer.
Flip Enable Legacy Mode and print again
Many blank, garbled, or oddly laid-out printouts come from a driver that mishandles fonts or images in state PDF forms. ElderSuite's built-in fallback is Enable Legacy Mode on the Report Viewer toolbar.
- Leave the report open in the Report Viewer.
- Note whether Enable Legacy Mode at the right-hand end of the toolbar is on or off.
- Flip it to the opposite position. You do not need to close and reopen the report.
- Click Print again. ElderSuite reads the setting when the Windows printing dialog appears.
The preference starts switched on for a new installation, so if it is currently off, turning it on is the first thing to try. Legacy Mode sends the job to the driver as raw images, which works around drivers that mishandle fonts but also makes printing slower—especially over wireless.
Check paper size, scaling, and margins in the print dialog
If the on-screen report is correct but the paper still looks cut off or stretched, open Print and review the Windows printing dialog before blaming the form:
- Confirm the selected printer is the one you intend (not an old or virtual printer left as Windows default).
- Set Paper size to the size the form expects, usually Letter.
- Avoid shrink-to-fit or fit-to-page scaling that crops or squeezes the page unless you are intentionally reducing a large form.
- Check margins if the dialog exposes them, then print one test page.
These controls belong to Windows and the printer driver, not to an ElderSuite settings screen. There is no Report Viewer Settings menu for users to open.
Isolate the printer with Print to PDF
As a quick isolating test, choose Microsoft Print to PDF (or another PDF printer) in the Windows printing dialog and save a PDF.
- If the PDF looks correct, the ElderSuite report is fine and the problem sits with the physical printer or its driver.
- If the PDF is also blank or garbled, flip Enable Legacy Mode again and retry, or use Save As below.
Install the current driver for your exact printer model
When Legacy Mode and the print dialog do not settle it, install the current driver for that exact printer model from the manufacturer's website. Drivers recycled from an older model on the same product line are a common cause of partial or garbled output.
Printer hardware, drivers, and manufacturer utilities are outside ElderSuite Support—see What is outside our support. Your IT contact or the printer maker handles the driver install.
Last resort: Save As, then print from Adobe
If the job still misprints from ElderSuite:
- In the Report Viewer, click Save As (immediately right of Print, or Ctrl+S) before you close the window. Closing the viewer deletes the temporary file.
- Choose a folder and a clear file name, then save.
- Open the saved file in Adobe Acrobat Reader and print from there. Acrobat uses its own print engine, which often succeeds when the printer driver mishandles the job from ElderSuite.
Save As is not always available. It is grayed out for the HICF 1500 claim form, and it is removed from the toolbar when the Report Viewer was opened from the Claim screen. Neither is a fault. For those claim forms, use Print and the Enable Legacy Mode toggle instead.
Troubleshooting
- Empty Report Viewer or File Not Found. The produced file was removed from ElderSuite's temporary folder before it could be shown—often disk cleanup, antivirus, or file syncing on that computer. Produce the report again. Do not treat this as a printer fault or flip Legacy Mode for it.
- "The report you are trying to print is missing. Please re-install ElderSuite." The blank form template is missing from ElderSuite's PDF Files folder. Re-install ElderSuite as the message instructs, then run the report again from its Center.
- "The report was not generated successfully. Please try again." On some reports (for example the Client Roster) this can mean the date range found no clients. Fix the filters and preview again before changing printer settings.
- Printing is very slow with Legacy Mode on. That is expected: Legacy Mode sends large images. If output is correct but slow, leave Legacy Mode on only when you need it, or use a wired/USB connection rather than wireless when you can.
- Enable Legacy Mode does not stay remembered. The toggle still applies to the current print job. If ElderSuite reports that settings could not be saved, keep the ElderSuite settings folder out of antivirus quarantine, file syncing, and disk cleanup tools.
Before you open a support ticket
When the report looks right on screen but still will not print correctly after the steps above, run the four checks on ElderSuite Support before you open a ticket:
- Close ElderSuite completely so any pending update can install, then reopen it.
- Check for Windows updates and let them install. ElderSuite is kept current with Windows 10 and later.
- Restart the computer.
- Confirm your contact information in ElderSuite is current so we can reach you about the ticket.
Still stuck? Open a support ticket. Include the report or form name, what the printout looks like, your printer model, and whether Enable Legacy Mode was on or off when you printed.
After printing works again, return to the report you need—for example attendance and absence reports or the client roster—and print from the Report Viewer as usual.
