How to Set ISS Objectives in ElderSuite

ISS Objectives holds the goals from each ISS client's implementation plan. Learn where to open it, add and order objectives, and retire old ones without changing days already logged.

📝 Overview

Every person your center serves under Individualized Skills and Socialization (ISS) has an implementation plan, written by their program provider. The plan lists the objectives the person is working toward. ISS Objectives is the window where your center keeps that list for one client, one objective per row, in the plan’s order.

The list feeds each day of the ISS Service Log. On every service day, the client’s active objectives appear as check boxes, so staff can record which ones the day worked toward, and the checked objectives print with that day’s note on the ISS Service Notes page behind the client’s Form 8615. That page prints from Create ISS Statements in the Claim Center; see How to Create ISS Statements in ElderSuite.

⚙ How It Works

Where the Set ISS Objectives Button Appears

The button lives on the client’s Payment Settings tab in Client Information. It’s the same button that normally reads Claim Setup. When the client’s payment type is an ISS program provider, meaning a payment type with the ISS Program Provider box checked in Manage Payment Types, the button reads Set ISS Objectives and opens ISS Objectives instead. There is no claim to set up for an ISS client, because the program provider bills the state and your center sends the program provider a statement.

The caption follows the Payment Type box. It changes as soon as you choose a different payment type and move out of the box, and it goes back to Claim Setup for any payment type that isn’t an ISS program provider. The ISS features are shown on Texas accounts, where the ISS program runs, and matter only to centers that hold an ISS license. For the program providers themselves, see How to Manage ISS Program Providers in ElderSuite.

Open It From Client Information

Open the client from the Client Center with Client List and Edit Client, or start a new one with Add New Client (see How to Add a Client in ElderSuite). On the Payment Settings tab, choose the client’s ISS payment type, then click Set ISS Objectives. For the rest of the tab, see How to Update Payment Settings in ElderSuite.

The objectives belong to a saved client, so ElderSuite asks you to save first when needed:

  • On a client who has never been saved, it asks “This is a new record which has not been saved. You must save the record before you can set its ISS objectives. Would you like to save now?”
  • On a saved client with unsaved changes, it asks “You must save your changes before setting the ISS objectives. Would you like to save your changes now?”

Yes saves the client and opens ISS Objectives, headed with the client’s name. No stops, and nothing opens.

Open It From a Service Log Day

You can also reach the list while recording a day. In the Client Center, click Manage ISS Service Logs, then click Record on the client’s day row. Under the objectives list on the Service Log window, click Edit the client’s objectives. When the client has no objectives yet, the same link reads No objectives on the client’s record yet - add them. Anything already checked or typed on the day is kept while the list is open. The link does nothing on a read-only day, where the row’s button reads View instead of Record.

The window makes no permission check of its own. For a Limited Access user, the Client Information route needs the Edit Clients permission, and the Service Log route needs the Edit Attendance & Transportation Records permission. An administrator grants either one on the employee record in the Provider Center. The change takes effect within five minutes, or right away after the employee signs out and back in.

Add the Objectives From the Plan

The window holds a grid with three columns, #, Objective, and Inactive, under a toolbar with Add Objective, Remove, Move Up, and Move Down.

  1. Click Add Objective. A new numbered row appears with its Objective cell open for typing.
  2. Type the objective as it is worded in the implementation plan. The row grows to fit longer wording, and the cell stops accepting characters at 500.
  3. Click Add Objective again for the next one. Leaving a row saves it right away.

To correct wording later, click into the row’s Objective cell, change the text, and leave the row. Days already logged keep the wording they were saved with, so an edit here doesn’t rewrite past service days.

Put the Objectives in Plan Order

The # column sets the order the objectives appear in on each Service Log day. It can’t be typed into, and the grid can’t be re-sorted. To move an objective, click its row and click Move Up or Move Down. Each click swaps the row with its neighbor and saves both rows. Repeat until the list matches the plan.

A new objective is numbered one higher than the highest number in the list. Removing a row leaves a gap in the numbering, and nothing renumbers. The order is still correct, so the gap doesn’t need fixing.

Retire an Objective or Remove a Mistake

When an objective leaves the implementation plan, check its Inactive box and leave the row. The objective stays on the client’s record and stops being offered on the Service Log day, and every day already logged against it is kept. To bring it back, uncheck Inactive; nothing about the row is lost while it is inactive.

Remove is for a line typed by mistake. Click the row and click Remove. ElderSuite asks “Remove this objective?”, quotes its text, and reminds you that days already logged keep their wording and that Inactive keeps the objective in the list. Yes deletes the row at once. No leaves it in place.

Saving and Closing

The window has no Save, OK, Cancel, or Close button, and Esc doesn’t close it. Each row saves as soon as you leave it. Remove, Move Up, and Move Down save right away, and closing the window with the X on its title bar saves everything again. A blank line left selected when you close is dropped. If the closing save can’t finish, the window stays open so nothing is lost.

What Changes on the Service Log Day

When ISS Objectives closes after being opened from a Service Log day, the Service Log window reads the objectives again and rebuilds its check list in # order, leaving out inactive objectives. Anything you had already checked stays checked, and an objective removed in the window simply no longer appears. The link updates to Edit the client’s objectives once the client has objectives. A Service Log day opened later lists the current objectives.

A day can’t be marked Done until the client has objectives on record and at least one is checked. For the rest of the day’s steps, see How to Use the ISS Service Log in ElderSuite.

Fix Common Problems

  • The button reads Claim Setup. The payment type chosen on Payment Settings isn’t an ISS program provider. Choose the client’s ISS payment type and move out of the Payment Type box, or check ISS Program Provider on the payment type. For the non-ISS version of the button, see How to Use Claim Setup in ElderSuite.
  • A row shows “Type the objective, or remove the line.” The row has no wording. Add Objective, Move Up, and Move Down do nothing until you type the objective or remove the line.
  • The window won’t close. A row other than the selected one is blank. Type its wording or remove it, then close again.
  • Move Up or Move Down does nothing. No row is selected, the row is already first or last, or its wording is blank.
  • ElderSuite shows “These objectives changed since you opened them and your changes were not saved. Open the list again to make changes.” The objectives were changed elsewhere after your window loaded. Click OK; the list reloads with the current objectives. Then redo your changes.
  • The Service Log day shows “The client has no objectives on their record. Use the link under Objectives to add the implementation-plan objectives first.” Click No objectives on the client’s record yet - add them, add the objectives, close the window, and check at least one.

⚠ Removed Objectives Can’t Be Restored

Once you answer Yes to “Remove this objective?”, the row is deleted and there is no undo. The same happens if you clear an objective’s wording and close the window while that row is still selected: the blank row is deleted, not restored. For an objective that has left the plan, check Inactive instead. To keep an objective you cleared by accident, retype its wording before closing. If a removal was a mistake, type the objective again with Add Objective.
